Ashtead Community
Ashtead is a village is an ancient settlement dating back
to before Romans times. Artefacts and burial sites have
been discovered on Ashtead Common and where the Esso Headquarters
is now situated.
With approximately 15,000 people, it lies between the towns
of Leatherhead and Epsom. Northwards is the unspoilt 400
acre area of Ashtead Common, a Site of Special Scientific
Interest and National Nature Reserve, now owned and maintained
by the Corporation of London. Southwards is the famous Epsom
Downs. Well served by London trains, and its proximity to
the motorway network, it is popular with daily commuters
yet retaining its village atmosphere, evidenced by the increasingly
well-attended Village Day held in the Recreation Ground.
The village boasts two shopping areas with a variety of
local shops and banks, and also has numerous thriving local
clubs and associations. Amongst the latter is the Ashtead
Residents' Association, which has over 6,000 members and
represents the views of the residents to the local Councils.
