As it reaches its 40th Anniversary this year, The Leatherhead Theatre goes from strength to strength, with a wealth of events and activities on offer throughout the year.

Originally known as the Thorndike Theatre, it has been described as “the jewel in Leatherhead’s crown.”  From its birth as “The Leatherhead Theatre” in the High Street in 1951, through to it’s re-opening of the new building in Church Street in 1969, it was way ahead of its time in realizing that a venue needs to place itself at the heart of its community; to be a vital social centre and not just a place where plays happen.

Since 2001, The Leatherhead Theatre has been under the careful and caring stewardship of the Leatherhead Revival Trust and are in the process of building on the proud heritage of what was a visionary venue of the last century and make it, not only a thriving and relevant one for the 21st century, but also a community centre with strong social beliefs that can define the character and identity of Leatherhead itself.

With their new Artistic Director Simon Fielder now on board and with Inclusion, Education, Entertainment and Excellence as their guiding principles, they are steadily re-establishing the theatre and arts centre at the heart of Leatherhead life and broadening its appeal to a Surrey-wide audience.

With such a varied and exciting programme including music, dance, drama, childrens’ shows, musicals, comedy, opera and of course their annual Christmas pantomime, there has never been a better time to visit!  Plus, they recently launched The Leatherhead Theatre Academy of Performing Arts, their latest venture in offering an extensive array of workshops in all aspects of performance for children.

They continue their commitment in supporting gifted artists with exhibitions, have the pleasure of bringing some of the latest film releases (and some old favourites!) to the big screen and offer local businesses and organisations the chance to hire their very spacious auditorium, meeting rooms, and Casson Room Studio.

They have many exciting plans for the theatre, both on-and-off stage and hope that, over the next few months and, indeed, years, they will welcome both existing and new patrons through their doors.
